From Paris to Shanghai, three generations of French photographers

To celebrate the Year of France in China, the Shanghai Art Museum, in partnership with Alcatel, is hosting a photography exhibition from March 17 – April 17, 2005.

This exhibit brings together 35 photographers. Some are artists who, thanks to their talent, fame, and influence on their own and subsequent generations, symbolize French photography of the 1950s and 80s. Some are young artists offering entirely new forms of expression using 21st century technologies.

Alcatel President Philippe Germond presides over the ribbon cutting ceremony with Shanghai Vice Mayor Yang Xiaodu, French Ambassador Philippe Guelluy, Coordinator of the France China Year Committee on France side Alain Lombard, and Xue Peijian, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Government.

The exhibition is composed of works from public and private collections including the “Maison Européenne de la Photographie” and the Lhoist collection. To illustrate the new generation, Jean-Luc Monterosso and Sophie Schmit worked with nine top French galleries to include one artist from each gallery in this exhibit. In total, more than 130 works show the vitality and creativity of three generations of photographers.

Alcatel, Sponsor of the “Year of France in China”:

Alcatel has been operating in China for about 20 years. Alcatel's participation in the “Comité d'Honneur” for the “Year of France in China” is part of its corporate citizenship policy that encourages exchange, particularly in the areas of art and culture.
This type of exchange is an essential link between the company and the communities in which it operates. Sponsorship of the “Year of France in China” is natural for Alcatel who was already an active partner in the “Year of China in France”.
In this context, Alcatel sponsored two photo exhibitions (“Pingyao in Paris” and “Yesterday's and Tomorrow's Shanghai”) and a round-table discussion of Chinese and French mayors on the topic of “Urban growth, sustainable development and high technology.”
